Father's Day

CompassionI remember sitting on the front steps having a yarn with my wife. Mid sentence, she said something like, ‘I think it’s time to go to the hospital’. I was the picture of calmness – not! I discovered a new level of adrenaline that day, and new dimensions of Joy. A few hours later we sat with babe in arms, enjoying beautiful moments together.

There have been many more beautiful moments of Fatherhood/ parenting since then over nearly twenty years of raising children, or should I say, raising young adults: first words, watching first steps, first class – a lot of firsts; proud moments of watching them grow, their achievements, and sharing sadder moments in their sorrows; intimate times together, fun times and lots of laughs, and the occasional spat too; and there’s the socks and hankies on Father’s Day! A bit corny, but somehow rewarding!

Father’s Day reminds me of all this, but also of the amazing responsibility I have and to do my utmost to provide for my children everything they need for life, and for faith. I can provide material things, but they are secondary in importance. Being a good example: in everything; pouring love, affection, affirmation upon them; communicating values; providing guidance, truth, loving values; nurturing a loving and enjoyable family life; and above all pointing them to God; helping them to develop a healthy spirituality.

Sounds like a tall order, and there are no perfect fathers, but I need to give it all I’ve got. I have only this one life to help them make a life! (Pr Greg)

Jesus Goes With Us

Mark 16:14-15, 19-20
14 Later Jesus appeared to the Eleven as they were eating; he rebuked them for their lack of faith and their stubborn refusal to believe those who had seen him after he had risen.

15 He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation."

19 After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, he was taken up into heaven and he sat at the right hand of God.

20 Then the disciples went out and preached everywhere, and the Lord worked with them and confirmed his word by the signs that accompanied it.
