Sharpening the Sword!
‘For the Word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double edged sword’ (Heb 4:12)
Through November our church is renewing our passion for the Word of God. We’ll have time each Sunday focusing on how the Word of God changes lives and empowers people!
One word from God can change a life forever!
The people who first read those words in Hebrews 12 knew exactly what the writer meant. They knew the power of a double edged sword. If you wanted to protect yourself from an aggressor, that was the sword to have. ‘Don’t muck around with anything else, just get me one of those fellas’. They also knew that those who wielded the sword had the power (Authority). The Romans made certain everyone understood this very well!
Of course, a sword at one level is not a desirable thing! It is a weapon of War just as much for self defense! But, on a spiritual level, the sword the writer of Hebrews mentions is most desirable! It is the Word of God. Paul said in Ephesians, ‘take up the Sword of the Spirit’ (v17). In context, he was talking about the spiritual war that is raging about us everyday.
Make no mistake, there is a war! It’s the war for the souls of men, women, and children. And if this war is going to be won then the Word of God needs to be used! Christians need to take it up. We need to somehow get the Word into people’s hearts! Only through the Word can people come to know God, Only through the Word can people be fully freed from Satan’s power! Only through the Word can people be saved!
On a personal level we need to take up the Word for the sake of our own souls. Every week the average person takes in countless numbers of messages. We absorb huge quantities of information into our minds, and it affects our souls. It shapes our thinking and influences how we will live, what we will do, what we will desire! This is why advertisers spend billions, because they know that if they can fill people’s minds with images of their products, they will be drawn to them over time, and they will most likely make that purchase.
Christians can’t survive spiritually on a 30 minute sermon ever Sunday. They must take up the Sword of the Spirit every day. They must use that double edged sword. The must learn to wield it skillfully. It’s a sword that kills off everything the enemy might try to sow into your life. It will defeat every enemy of your soul. It will enable you to walk in the authority of Christ and live life victoriously. This sword also heals, perhaps like a surgeon’s scalpel. It will nourish you soul. It will empower you spiritually, and give you the tools to be all that God intended you to be!
Join in this month of November. Check it out online, or if you live locally to our church, why not call in Sundays 10am, or 5:30pm for Café church.
